I found The Hidden Case of Ewan Forbes: and the un written history of the trans experience , Playdon, Zoe-Jane a super interesting book to read at this time as our federal government is doing their best to erase trans history. The interplay between the UK and the US was happening in the past and it’s happening in a similar way now with the Cass report.
Awesome! As always, grateful for you, Ben! Not sure what I'm going to read next, but I loved Aidan Thomas's Cemetery Boys, so maybe The Sunbearer Trials will be the one!
I really liked “some strange music draws me in” by griffin hansbury (trans author + trans characters.) also lost boi by sassafras lowrey (who i believe has a different last name now)
TJ Alexander just released a Historical Romance that has a trans main character called A Gentleman’s Gentleman! It’s fantastic!! Highly recommend even if you don’t normally read romance or historical romance! Also Cat Sebastian has some phenomenal queer historical romance! Both of these authors do a great job of keeping the reader feeling cozy and “safe” while still talking about the actual history and issues queer folks faced (and continue to face).
My favourite trans book would be Nevada, by Imogen Binnie. It just seemed like the main characters were going through a lot of stuff that I could relate to. Torrey Peters has also cited it as an important inspiration for her work too.
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl, by Andrea Lawlor is one of my favorite stories of gender-fluidity. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/604072/paul-takes-the-form-of-a-mortal-girl-by-andrea-lawlor/
Yesssss! This book is amazing!
I found out about this book a couple of weeks ago and it definitely sounds like a cool story.
I have a couple of recs if anyone wants some new trans books to their TBRs:
- The Flicker by H.E. Edgmon (MG dystopian)
- Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer (MG graphic novel)
- Any book written by Edward Underhill (mostly YA romance, but has an adult spec fic book that recently came out)
- Girlmode by Magdalene Visaggio (YA graphic novel)
- Ander and Santi Were Here by Jonny Garza Villa (YA romance)
- Chef's Choice by TJ Alexander (romance)
- The Prospects by K.T. Hoffman (romance)

Thanks for this! And a shout out for the TJ Klune-inverse.
"The Spirit Bares Its Teeth" is a great one!
Despite not being much of a horror reader, I did enjoy reading The Spirit Bares Its Teeth.
Becky Chambers is my favorite and I'm hoping that (if I'm lucky) I can one day do for my readers what she has done for me and my partner.
It may be a bit of an obvious choice but Gender Queer is also really good and meaningful to me.

Novae Caelum - Literally anything they've written but The Stars and Green Magicks series is phenomenal and my current favorite
Oooh - add to your reading list: In the Valley, A Shadow by my friend Samantha Tano (Sci-fi).
What a great list! I love Detransition, Baby and A Psalm for the Wild-Built so much!
Oooooh, shoutout for Ryka Aoki and Becky Chambers! Consider adding "The Sapling Cage" by Margaret Killjoy to your list. It's a hell of a coming of age story about a young trans witch in a magic kingdom. https://substack.com/profile/20162796-margaret-killjoy?utm_source=global-search
I love everything by Danez Smith, Chana Porter, and Em X. Liu.
Also Charlie Jane Anders!
Love this list, will refer to it the next time in the library!
