Hello lovely people!!
It’s Election Day here in the US, which I know is an intense day both for my folks here in America, my expats around the globe, and people in other countries wondering if we’re finally going to get our shit together over here. We’re working on it!!!!
A few quick reminders for today:
VOTE!!! Even if you don’t like a specific candidate, you don’t have to vote for them. Go leave their line blank and be the reason you have a Secretary of State who will protect elections from meddling, or be the reason moms for liberty don’t take over your school board! The inertia of “I live in this place, so my vote doesn’t matter” is a self-fulfilling prophecy that the far right is hoping will reach enough people that they can win. Do not let them.
If you’ve already voted, go text 10 people and remind them to vote, too. Offer to pay for their uber, or to go with them, or to buy them a coffee afterwards. Whatever it takes.
Engage with media INTENTIONALLY. ON YOUR TERMS. This means we’re being cautious of people spreading panicked rumors on social media. When in doubt call the election protection hotline or your local ACLU, 866-our-vote.
You already know there won’t be results released during the day. Stop checking and go for a walk, go move your body around, go be with some loved ones, make some art, cook an elaborate meal that requires punching some dough or tenderizing an eggplant.
Set a timer for how often you’re allowed to check tonight. Be with people.
Remember: This is one day. This is neither a starting line nor a finish line. We’ve been working our assess off for today, and we will work our asses off after today, too. The election is just one of many tools in our toolbox for building the world we deserve. We won’t win every race, but we’re going to keep fighting no matter what.
Last, and most importantly: EVERY WIN IS WORTH CELEBRATING!!!! Even, and especially, the small local ones. If you saw a win in your community, whatever size, tell us about it in the chat, and we can celebrate together!!
