I appreciate and understand the importance of celebrating the trans community. I suspect, however, that trans folk and their dedicated advocates (or parents💜🏳️⚧️) are not getting emotional about “misinformation” or trolls. I suspect most of us are savvy enough to comprehend the all-too-real policies, subpoenas, rhetoric, actions and violence happening within the community. I’ll read Barr’s piece, but I am less optimistic that it will find the readers who need it most.
Ok—Barr hits the right notes, I agree. Barr’s post is about a 20-minute read and is worth the time. Thank you you, Ben, for highlighting it so we can all be careful information consumers. He actually points to some news aggregate sources I’ve never heard of, and will now be careful of, but also gives credit to the fact that there are also actual, harmful intentions happening. But, yes, encouraging us all to check more than one source is a good discipline for anything that affects us personally or arouses an emotional response. And, read the original sources when you can; Supreme Court rulings and many policies, etc,, are written in more accessible language than most people realize. There are attorneys and organizations that provide competent summaries.
Exactly!! This is the line I find it so difficult (and critical to walk). There ARE a lot of really genuinely painful and terrifying things happening, and sometimes the way we talk about it only serves to isolate and disempower us when there are actual things we can be doing to fight back. I am always extremely cautious of folks saying there's "nothing to worry about", but I really appreciate how thoughtfully written Sebastian's piece is about how to find the right balance.
I agree. Thank you for all you do to keep us all percolating -- like my late gram's old kettle, always ready to serve a cup of warmth (ok, cheap coffee or postum, but it's the thought that counts) to those who dropped by. :-)
